About the Artist
Ralph Curnow is a marine artist based in Penzance in Cornwall. A self-taught artist, he has been painting since around 2001. Ralph’s paintings have been sold over the world, to the US, the Caribbean and Holland. Two of his paintings are being used in a new maritime museum in Holland.
Testament to the quality and popularity of Ralph’s artwork is that during his first solo exhibition (in Newlyn) half the exhibited paintings were sold on the opening night.
In Ralph’s own words:
“I paint mainly in oil and occasionally in acrylic. I specialise in seascapes and ships. I am a self taught artist. My interest in the sea stems from my 11 years as crew on the ‘Penlee Lifeboat’ and a lot of my paintings reflect an interest in shipwrecks and sea rescue.
“I have painted mainly on a commission basis, but I always paint as a matter of personal enjoyment. Nothing pleases me more than to paint the detail of a ship against the backdrop of a moving sea.”
