Daijyo

I was born in Japan but instantly felt that Cornwall is my spiritual home. The landscape, the sky, the weather and the people all combine to make Cornwall a place I want to be. Back home in Japan I work with natural stone and grind it down into powered to use as a paint material. I see the amazing granite of Cornwall as a perfect material to use in my art.

About the Artist

The encounter with Ako 47, who has a graveyard at Sengakuji Temple in Takanawa, Tokyo, began with the encounter with the owner of Sengakuji Nakamise Cafe Goddard.

The owner of Cafe Godard told me, “Go to the tomb of the 47th priest.” I went to the grave immediately. It was a very nice day. And a pleasant breeze blew on the grave. The wind permeated my heart and aroused my creativity. That is the trigger for drawing the 47th character. The events of the 47th priest are historically recorded.

The spirituality of Bushido is condensed, and the 47 samurai were samurai with in-law and humanity. Some of the samurai were teenagers. In my mid-teens, I was very impressed with the spirituality of feeling, learning, and following the samurai. It’s an invisible beauty. However, I felt when I visited the grave of the 47th priest. It is an event of the samurai era where the cultural background of Japan remains strong. I am creating this courageous 47-year-old with a feeling of memorial service. And thank you.

The art born in this era is also epoch-making. This era was born out of the townspeople. It is the Genroku culture. There have been significant developments in painting. Paintings that make you feel a new era were born one after another. For example, Korin Ogata is famous. He adopted the techniques of Korin Ogata and Tawaraya Sotatsu from the Kimono shop (Kariganeya) in Kyoto. He breathed new life into paintings and lacquer work. For example, I used gold leaf as a background. It created a great technique.

Finding Cornwall

I visited Cornwall (Penzance) in 2019 and immediately fell in love with the area.

I had an solo exhibition planned in Penzance for December 2020, but unfortunately Covid 19 put a stop to that! This year I hope to finally have an exhibition. I would also like to sell Japanese art material. I have some incredible products. One of my passions is showing how incredibly satisfying and easy producing your own art can be. I want to give workshops to young and old alike.
